Education:  SDSU (1960), JD from USD (1963).  Marines 2nd Lieutenant, released from active duty during law school, returned 1964 as combat correspondent, photojournalist and combat air crew member.  Served in Vietnam until 1966, retired as Colonel in 1991.  (Bronze Star, 3 Air Medals and Combat Action Ribbon; Legion of Merit, Desert Shield/Desert Storm).  Admitted to California Bar in 1964.

Work:  Law clerk, CJ James M. Carter, So. Dist. CA (63-64), private practice (1964-1974).  Private mediation (2002-07).

Bench: Magistrate, U.S. District Court (So. Dist. CA), 74-82.  U.S. Commissioner, 1968-69.  Municipal Court Judge (CA), 1982, elevated to Superior Court in 1998.  Retired from Superior Court in 2002, and then recalled to the U.S. Dist. Court for the Western District of New York (part-time 2002-2006, fulltime thereafter).  

Bar/other:  SDCBA Board (78-80); Judge of the Year (San Diego Trial Lawyers), Legal Professional of Year Award (Foothills Bar Assoc.); served as a Senior Fulbright Scholar in the Sub-Saharan African country of Eritrea.  President, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Historical Society; Vice-chair, Vietnam Veteran’s Village of San Diego; director, Flying Leathernecks Historical Foundation; Faculty Council, National Judicial College. President, San Diego County Law Library Board of Trustees (93-95); President, San Diego County Law Library Justice Foundation (93, 95; member, 2004-present). Author and lecturer.
