Potential candidates must have the following qualifications:
- Have been an SDCBA Attorney Member for at least three of the last five years;
- Have been licensed to practice law for at least seven full years by the time of service commencing;
- Are currently admitted to practice law in the State of California or any other U.S. jurisdiction;
- Have not been disbarred, suspended from practicing law, or withdrawn or resigned while disciplinary charges are pending, from any bar to which the candidate has been admitted, as of the time the nomination is received;
- Have not been convicted of a felony in the seven years preceding the candidacy;
- Have demonstrated leadership as chair of a SDCBA Section or Committee, as a member of another non-profit organization's Board of Directors (legal or community), or similar experience as determined by Leadership Outreach Committee and ratified by the Board*;
- In order to qualify to run for the regional seat, the attorney candidate must either (1) have their primary office in the geographic area; (2) have been a former president of the regional bar association within the last two years; or (3) have significant ties to the region (as deemed appropriate by the Board*).
*Determinations and ratifications of these requirements must be made prior to the nomination deadline.
According to the SDCBA bylaws, the candidate nomination form shall include the nominee’s declaration of candidacy, the nominee’s confirmation of the election requirements listed above, and any other necessary information requested. If, between the date of nomination and the date of election, a nominee shall cease to be eligible, their name may be stricken from the ballot by action of the Board.
