Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Division
Diversity isn't just a buzzword we use at the SDCBA. It’s part of the very fabric of our Association. Initiatives that support inclusion are a significant part of the Association’s work and mission, and throughout the years, we’ve continued to provide, build upon and support diversity in the legal profession . We are committed to promoting inclusion in every aspect of our association and creating a more inclusive legal community.
Charge:
The DEI Division is charged with promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, and improved access to justice in all aspects of the legal profession, the community, and the justice system; fostering greater awareness and understanding of traditional, systemic barriers that have prevented the full participation of diverse communities in the legal profession and the justice system; and actively working against all forms of racism and discrimination within the legal profession, the justice system, and the community as a whole.
Format:
Governed by a 7-member executive committee. The initial executive committee of the division shall be established by appointment of the President and ratification of the Board. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Division’s executive committee includes a Chair, two Vice-Chairs, and four (4) Member-At-Large seats.

Subdivisions
Programs & Events Subdivision:
The Programs and Events Subdivision will work to ensure that the Association is actively anti-racist and anti-discrimination in its endeavors and will propose solutions to effect positive change in the legal profession and the justice system. The Programs and Events Subdivision also provides education and awareness to the legal community on diversity related issues, including our ongoing Dialogue on Diversity series and our Exchange on Equity Roundtables. In addition, this subdivision oversees the social events of this division, including the Spring Mixer and Holidays Around the World.
Outreach Subdivision:
The Outreach Subdivision engages and forges closer relationships with the affinity bars, including encouraging greater participation in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Division, and encouraging diverse lawyers to participate and lead in both formal and informal capacities. The Outreach Subdivision also brings together members who are interested in disability rights issues, or who are differently abled themselves, to raise awareness, foster collaboration, and create community. Activities overseen by the Outreach Subdivision include affinity bar relations and projects for the differently abled.
